Visit Café Liebling in Munich – Café, Kiosk, Wohnzimmer

On Saturday morning, we visited a beautiful little coffee shop called ‘Café Liebling’ in the eastern part of Munich. ‘Liebling’ is German for ‘darling’ and ‘Lieblings-‘ means favourite, e.g. ‘Lieblingsfarbe’ = ‘favourite colour’. Guests can get a wide range of refreshment drinks here, as well as cakes, sweets and an extensive breakfast and lunch menu. Cakes are made according to ‘mum’s recipe’. Decorated in warm, bright colours with many devices, such as games, books and teddy bears spread about, the cafe immediately gives you a comfortable and homely feeling.

Unlike your average coffee shop, Café Liebling offers rather an extraordinary concept: the price is determined by the customer: ‘Der Kunde bestimmt den Preis’ and the cafe takes whatever the customer offers. Christian, who was working there on Saturday morning, explained that most guests are surprised by this concept and many are not sure how much to offer. Together with his brother and his friend, Christian has been running the cafe for four years now. All three of the young owners have regular jobs and take turns in working at the cafe. He described the cafe as more of a hobby than a full-time job. Most of Café Liebling’s regular visitors (‘Stammkunden’) are neighbours from the local area.

For those of you looking for something unusual and a little off the beaten track in Munich, Café Liebling is definitely worth a visit. You will feel so relaxed and at home, you might not want to leave! The clostest S-Bahn/U-Bahn stop is Ostbahnhof.
